ERIC R. STONE
Eric R Stone is a freelance journalist and translator in Taiwan.
In 2013, a fresh graduate, Eric stuffed everything he owned into an old suitcase with a broken wheel and left the tiny midwestern town he grew up in for a lonely journey 12,000 miles East to Taiwan, knowing nobody in a several-thousand mile radius and having only just begun to study the local language.
Around the end of 2014, he was fluent enough in Mandarin to go full-time as a freelance Chinese-to-English translator; and by 2015, Eric got into human rights journalism after he was contracted to work with Chinese whistleblowers on news and investigative features as a document translator.
After years of poring over Chinese news, reports, and government documents, Eric has since turned journalist, with a focus on culture and politics in Taiwan and human rights issues in China.
Eric also translates Buddhist and Taoist scripture (經文) and commentaries from Chinese into English, as well as other Classical Chinese (文言文) literature, such as ancient ghost stories.
In his free time, Eric DMs (runs) a Mandarin-language Dungeons & Dragons campaign for his Taiwanese friends.
